Since the Paramount acquisition from Skydance Media, MTV has the most questionable future. Once a cultural powerhouse that defined generations of music-based programs to reality series, MTV is now in a weird state. MTV's recent staples, including "Ridiculousness", "Catfish", and now "Jersey Shore", are all ending, leaving the network with just reruns outside of "RuPaul's Drag Race".
However, in recent reports, it's been stated that David Ellison wants to revitalise the network. Likely with a strategic partnership and a return to its music roots.
Returning to Music-Centric Programming
MTV started off as a music-centric channel with music videos, concerts, music specials, and music-based unscripted reality fare. Shows like "MTV Unplugged" and "Total Request Live" or simply "TRL" were staples of the network. Bringing these programs back to the spotlight today's artists for this new generation could definitely be a step. Reformatting these shows to specifically cater to social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube to connect with the viewers would be important. Recently, a "TRL" esque short-form series called "Fresh Out Live" aired on MTV for a few years on Friday evenings before moving online for the last couple of years.
Expanding to Digital and Social Media Platforms
It would be important for MTV to embrace digital distribution. Since the beginning of this decade, audiences have increasingly shifted towards platforms such as YouTube, Twitch, and TikTok for music discovery and live performances.
Programs such as NPR's "Tiny Desk Concerts" have demonstrated the massive appeal of intimate, easily accessible performances online featuring popular artists ranging from Jill Scott, Dua Lipa, and Doechii.
MTV could certainly leverage this model by relaunching its "Unplugged" concert series through social media.
A modern "TRL" live series could be revived as an interactive live show simulcast on YouTube, TikTok, Twitch, etc., allowing the viewer to interact with the presenters and guests in the live comments.
Strategic Partnerships and New Opportunities
David Ellison has expressed interest in a strategic partnership or allowing a partial acquisition of MTV's stake to another company. I believe a collaboration with a music-focused company such as Vevo would be compelling.
Vevo has a strong presence in music video distribution through YouTube and has expanded into FAST channels.
Vevo could potentially air more music videos on the network either through commercial breaks or in its own designated timeslot. Vevo has produced its own in-house performances as well as original content. They've also been producing content similar to legacy MTV and VH1 programs like "Pop-Up Video", "Behind the Music", and "Unplugged". If this partnership were to happen, it could allow both brands to leverage their strengths.
In Conclusion
Right now, it still looks very bleak for the future of MTV. We've seen a lot of MTV assets being gutted since the end of the Chris McCarthy-led MTV era. MTV News was shuttered in 2024. MTV's dedicated 24/7 music channels internationally shuttered at the end of 2025. And now, MTV is fully operated by Paramount Skydance, and we're now facing cancellations of long-standing staples.
We'll see what happens with their future plans, especially if it's looking more like Paramount Skydance will actually close their acquisition with Warner Bros Discovery. And we know that will inevitably lead to more budget cuts, unfortunately.
